Title: The Address of Sir Francis Burdett to His Constituents, in a Letter Denying the Power of the House of Commons to Imprison the People of England
Description: London, T. Broom, 1810. Brochure/Pamphlet. A very scarce and smart copy of Francis Burdett's speech in 1810, in which he questions the power of the House of Commons to imprison people. A very scarce pamphlet in the publisher's original paper wraps, re-sewn, with the half title. Sir Francis Burdett (1770-1844) was a British MP who was an advocate of universal male suffrage, equal electoral districts, vote by ballot, and annual parliaments. In 1810, the radical John Gale Jones had been committed to prison by the House of Commons. In this speech, Burdett questions the power of the House of Commons to take this step. His commitment to reform resulted in legal proceedings and brief confinement to the Tower of London. A revised edition of this speech appeared in William Cobbett's Political Register. In the publisher's original paper wraps, re-sewn. Externally smart, though a little creased and age toned, with some shelf wear to the upper extremities of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean but age toned, with occasional offsetting, as is usual for paper of this age. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
