Horwood to the front leaf.Beginning with the subtitle 'vulgar fractions', Horwood's notebook consists of one-hundred and four pages of handwritten notes, sums and fractions, with sections devoted to the solving of multiplications, subtractions, decimal fractions, reductions and additions.Towards the rear of the work are thirteen small and partially coloured outlines of shapes - fields and flags - accompanied by calculations of their surface areas and dimensions. With the bookplate of Egerton Parker to the front paste down. Parker was a teacher and house master at Hereford Cathedral School from 1970 to 1997. Generally known as Ege Parker, he was passionate about the study of history.Loosely inserted, in a different hand, is a large leaf containing a poem with both English and Latin translations.A charming insight into the learning of simple maths in the nineteenth century. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip and board perimeters, resulting in losses to the leather. Significant loss and closed tear to back strip head.
