The first is The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table by Oliver Wendell Holmes, who was an American writer and essayist. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858), first appearing in Atlantic Monthly. The second is Pericles and Aspasia by Walter Savage Landor, an English writer best known for his works Imaginary Conversations, featuring a wide range of historical figures. Aspasia is commonly remembered for her romantic relationship with Pericles, the leader of democratic Athens and in this book, Landor conjures up imaginary conversations between these and other characters. With a preface by Havelock Ellis. Undated, dated through copies held at the University of Cambridge and University of Sussex Libraries. 13 pages to The Autocrat and 16 pages to Pericles and Aspasia of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally smart, though slightly faded to the spines and extremities, with small losses to the head of the spines. Spine labels are a little darkened but still legible. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, though some to Pericles and Aspasia have tears to the perimeters, not affecting the text.
