Marbled end papers and edges. James Boswell (1740-1795) was best known for this biography of his friend Samuel Johnson, commonly said to be the greatest biography written in the English language. It gives an account of his personality, his studies and works, as well as his correspondence and some previously unpublished work. Samuel Johnson had an influential and lasting effect on the development of English literature, particularly due to his dictionary, literary criticism and biographical works. This edition contains a facsimile of the title page from the original quarto edition and an advertisement to the first edition, along with an introduction by Mowbray Morris. In a half calf binding.
