Whilst her works reinforce stereotypical domestic gender roles, Hale was also a huge advocate of female education and was one of the first American woman novelists, and also one of the first novelists to write about slavery. In her varied life, the author also successfully campaigned to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, unifying similar celebrations in the north, and introducing the public holiday to the American South.
