A first edition of this two volume set, rebacked in full calf bindings, with the original leather laid down to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Ink inscriptions to the front free end paper of each volume, dated 1861. Illustrated with engraved portrait frontispieces and engraved vignettes to the title pages of each volume. 52 plates and 1 folding plate to Volume I. 35 plates and 1 folding plate to Volume II. The frontispiece depicting the author listed in Volume I has been used as the frontispiece to Volume II. The plate 'Time Smoking a Picture', originally meant to have been bound facing xciv, is in the place of the frontispiece to Volume I. The folding plate depicting Hogarth's tomb to Volume I is not listed. All collated and complete. A compelling study of the work of the renowned painter and engraver William Hogarth, best known for his series A Harlot's Progress, a Rake's Progress and Marriage a-la-Mode. His satirical caricatures became widely popular. This study was written by John Ireland, a great admirer and collector of his works. He begins with anecdotes of Hogarth, and then continues with studies of each of Hogarth's famous works. A supplement volume appeared in 1798 but these volumes are complete as issued. Rebacked in full calf bindings, with the original leather laid down to the boards. Externally smart, though a little rubbed to the spines and extremities. Tape repairs to the hinges of both volumes.
