Although Beckford originally composed the novel in French, it was soon translated into English by Reverend Samuel Henley. The novel capitalised on the Orientalism that was sweeping across Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and combines discussions of oriental cultures with the tropes of the gothic novel. Gilt of Merchant's Taylor's School in Liverpool to the front board. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown for J.R. Matthews, dated 1899. With binders sticker to front pastedown. 'Edward Howell. Church Street. Liverpool.' Undated. Dated using JISC from a copy held in the British Library. In full tree calf binding with a decorative spine. Externally lovely, with some marginal shelf wear only. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the title page is a little loose. Aside from some light foxing to the endpapers and plates, the pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed .
