Elizabeth Carter; Catherine Talbot - A Series of Letters between Mrs. Elizabeth Carter and Miss. Catherine Talbot

Title: A Series of Letters between Mrs. Elizabeth Carter and Miss. Catherine Talbot
Description: London, F. C. and J. Rivington, 1809. Leather. Volumes I and III only of the four volume second edition of the published correspondence of the Blue Stockings Catherine Talbot and Elizabeth Carter. First published in two volumes the previous year, and expanded to four volumes in this second edition, due to the inclusion of some of Carter's correspondences with Elizabeth Vesey. Scarce in any early edition. These volumes present a selection of the letters between two members of the eighteenth century Blue Stocking's Society, an informal women's social and educational movement, founded initially as a literary discussion group. Classicist Elizabeth Carter was a founding member of the group, and in 1741 developed a close friendship with author Catherine Talbot, as they appreciated each other's faculties, virtues and piety. Included here are a selection of their letters, with volume I consisting letters between January 1741, and December 1750, and volume III presenting letters between May 1762 and January 1770. In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strip. Significant losses to volume III back strip. Volume I joints, and front and rear joints of volume III, starting, with boards holding firm. Significant worming to volume III pastedowns, penetrating to page 7 at the start of the work, and the final sixteen leaves of the rear, but not affecting text. Internally, firmly bound. Significant tide marks title page of volume III, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright, with the odd spot. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
