Two of John Britton's popular Cathedral Antiquities works. Both with biographical anecdotes of the bishops and of other eminent persons connected with the churches. Bound in one volume. In a half calf binding on marbled boards. Comprising of: 'The See and Cathedral Church of Norwich', the very scarce first edition. With an engraved title page and twenty-four full-page plates. Collated complete. 'The Cathedral Church of Salisbury', the scarce first edition. With an engraved title page, frontispiece, and twenty-nine full-page plates. Collated complete. John Britton was an English antiquary, topographer and author, known for his work with Edward Wedlake Brayley and for his extensive series', 'The Beauties of England and Wales', and, 'Cathedral Antiquities of England&apos. His work was highly influential in popularising British topography. With an ink signature for one, 'Alice M. Allen', dated 1916, to the reverse of the front free endpaper and one for, 'Sam H. Warren', to the front blank. With a blindstamp for the University of Bristol Library to the title page, and a neat library stamp to the reverse of each plate. Rebound in half calf. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Marks to the boards. Hinges starting but still very firm. Ink inscription to reverse of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with some spotting to the plates and scattered spots throughout. Age-toning to the edges and handling marks throughout. The plate on page 75 of the Salisbury work has been repaired with tape. Ink inscription to the front blank. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
