John Preston Neale was an English architectural and landscape draughtsman, whose work features in numerous architectural works from the nineteenth century. No author is stated on the title page although the work is commonly credited to the English historian and topographer, Edward Wedlake Brayley. A detailed work on the history and antiquities of Westminster Abbey and Henry the Seventh's Chapel in London. With information on their tombs, ancient monuments and inscriptions. Alongside memoirs of the abbots and deans, from the earliest period to the present time. With an ink gift inscription to the reverse of the front free endpaper, for one, 'Sidney M. Luennell, Secretary of Westminster Hospital', from The House Committee of the Hospital, dated 1886. Rebound in quarter morocco. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Rubbing to the spine. Fading to the spine. Discoloration marks to the lower boards. The odd light mark to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Ink gift inscription to the reverse of the front free endpaper. Internally, binding strained. Two plates on page 24 are loose, and the plate on page 111 is loosening and could become detached upon further handling. Pages lightly age-toned to the edges but otherwise bright and clean with just the odd handling mark. Offsetting and some scattered spots to the frontispiece and to the title page.
