In eighteen illustrated chapters, Cundall relates a history of wood-engraving from its invention up through to the late 19th century. Cundall trained as a printer in his youth, and eventually became a publisher of children's books. As well as authoring several children's works under pseudonym Stephen Percy, Cundall was also a pioneer of photography, and was sent to manage the first photographic record of the Bayeux Tapestry 1871.
