The twelfth edition of this work in a full calf binding, with decorative gilt to the spine and boards. All edges gilt. Ink inscription to the verso of the front free end paper, dated 1889. William Edmondsoune Aytoun (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909) met in around 1841, and together they wrote, under the pseudonym Bon Gaultier, a series of humorous articles on the fashions and follies of the time, in which were interspersed the verses which afterwards became popular as the Bon Gaultier Ballads. In this twelfth edition of the Bon Gaultier Ballads are Spanish, American and miscellaneous ballads, with illustrations by Richard Doyle, John Leech and Alfred Crowquill. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, except for the odd spot to the first and last couple of pages. Near Fine .
