Rebound in quarter cloth and marbled boards, with gilt lettering to the spine. Illustrated with an engraved vignette to the half title page. Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773) was a British statesman, diplomat, and an acclaimed wit of his time. Despite having been an accomplished essayist and epigrammatist, Lord Chesterfield's literary reputation today derives almost entirely from Letters to His Son (1774) and Letters to His Godson (1890), books of private correspondence and paternal advice that he never intended for publication. As a handbook for worldly success in the 18th century, the Letters to His Son give perceptive advice for how a gentleman should interpret the social codes that are manners. In this volume are a selection of Lord Chesterfield's advice on manners and the improvement of character, with some of de la Rochefoucauld's maxims. Rebound in quarter cloth and marbled boards. Externally very smart, with light bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Very Good . Ill.: George Cruikshank. Very Good .
