Bound without publisher's catalogue to rear. James Anthony Froude was an English historian and editor, known for his scandalous novel The Nemesis of Faith (1849) before becoming one of the most famous historians of his time. This book concerns the West Indies, with discussions on colonialism, and descriptions of the author's travels, impressions, and observations of places such as Barbados, Pere Labat, Tobago, and more. Charming descriptive text is accompanied by illustrations engraved on wood by G. Pearson after drawings by the author. All eight full page plates present. In prize binding from the Rugby School, with armorial blind stamp to front board and bookplate to front pastedown.  Rebound in full calf with five raised bands, gilt tooling to spine, armorial blind stamp to front board, marbled edges and endpapers.
