In the first of four works of historical fiction set during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, Robert William Chambers offers a combination of romance and adventure set against the backdrop of the Paris Commune of 1871; a short-lived but influential French revolutionary government that seized power following France's defeat in the war. The novel follows on from 'The Street of the First Shell', a short story from his more well known book, The King in Yellow With four pages of publisher's adverts at rear, and to the reverse of dust wrapper. Undated, dated 1923 from the adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding with unclipped dust wrapper. Generally smart with bright orange cloth. Very light marks to front board, more marks to the rear of the book. Some rubbing to the spine. A little wear to the head and the spine, minimal wear to the extremities. Unclipped dust wrapper is discoloured to the spine and the rear wrap, but the front wrap remains bright. Loss to the head of the spine, affecting the title, with small tears to the rear of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good/Good.
