Julia Mary Cartwright Ady (1851-1924) was a British historian and art critic whose work focused on the Italian Renaissance. Cartwright Ady's most celebrated books were her biographies of Isabella d'Este, the Renaissance art patron, and her younger sister, Beatrice d'Este. Isabella d'Este (1474-1539) was Marchioness of Mantua and one of the leading women of the Italian Renaissance. Patron of the arts and a leader of fashion, her innovative style of dressing was copied by numerous women. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with a scattering of small faint marks to the boards and very light wear to the extremities. Colour is good and gilt is bright. Front hinge is splitting but still firm.
