A biographical sketch of James Beattie, written by the Scottish banker, writer and philanthropist, Sir William Forbes. Including many of Beattie's letters. James Beattie was a Scottish poet and philosopher, who was appointed Professor of Moral Philosophy at Marischal College in Aberdeen. He is best known for his 'Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth', and his poem, 'The Minstrel', which was highly praised by Samuel Johnson. The half title page is present in each volume. Volume three has two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. Volume one has a bookplate for one, 'Robert Johnson Eden', to the front paste-down. Uniformly bound in full calf. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Light marks to the boards. Spine is darkened. Offsetting and spotting to the free endpapers and paste-downs. Bookplate to the front paste-down of volume one. Hinges are strained but still firm. Front free endpaper in volume one is loosening at the top, but still attached. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with a few scattered spots throughout. Spotting to the title page and front blanks of volumes two and three. Some pencil annotations in volume one.
