First published in Germany in Latin, this is the second French translation, first published in French the year prior. A popular work by German anatomist, surgeon and botanist Lorenz Heister, the founder of scientific surgery in Germany and a professor of anatomy. In 1718, he coined the word "tracheotomy", and he is also credited as the first physician to perform a post-mortem section of appendicitis. Illustrated with a frontispiece to and eighteen plates to volume I, and twenty-two plates to volume II. Collated, complete.Plates depict in impressive detail surgical tools and equipment, alongside representations of birth, lobotomy and tracheotomy, among other surgical procedures. With a half title to volume I.With the bookplate 'Bouquot' to the front pastedowns, and the stamp of 'Bouquot, Chir. & Doct.' to the half title, alongside a further inscription to the half title, and to title pages.Two impressively detailed and illustrated volumes examining the history of surgery in the eighteenth century, with a particular focus on surgical instruments.   In full calf bindings, neatly rebacked, with gilt detailing. Light rubbing to board perimeters and joints. Retaining the original endpapers. Bookplates to front pastedowns, with inscription to volume I half title. Internally, firmly bound.
