The work is a rich study of the life of the people of Florence from an intellectual, artistic and religious perspective. The novel first appeared in fourteen parts in the Cornhil Magazine from July 1862 to August 1863 and was first published in book for in three volumes by Smith, Elder and Co in 1863. In half vellum binding with marbled covered boards. Externally, generally lovely with some light marks to the boards and spine. A previous owner inscription to the front free endpaper dated 1924.
