Dated to copyright 1899 and 1900 to illustrated title page. Dated from inscription, 1899. Collated, complete with two leaves of publisher's advertisements to rear.The celebrated reminiscences of childhood by Kenneth Grahame, following the true first of 1895.Eighteen tales recounted through charming imageries and metaphors rooted in the Ancient Greece, featuring many characters from Greek mythology; The adults are referred to as the 'Olympians.' The Prologue and six of the stories appeared previously in The National Observer. Celebrated for the writing style and for the world created by Grahame, in which the adults have forgotten what it means to be young, and are in continuous warfare with the children. This was a theme that became very popular later on and was explored by other authors. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with decorative gilt to front board. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only, lightly bumped to head and tail of spine, minor mark to rear board. Previous owner's gift inscription to front free endpaper dated 1899.
