Description: London, Thames & Hudson, 1950-1951. First edition. Cloth. Two volumes concerning the architecture of English and French cathedrals, in their original dust wrappers. The first edition of these two studies of cathedrals, in the publisher's original cloth bindings, with their original unclipped dust wrappers. Ink inscriptions to the front free end papers of both volumes. 6 full page plans and 166 large monochrome photographs to the volume on English cathedrals. 196 large monochrome photographs to the volume on French cathedrals. The photographs in both of the volumes were taken by Martin Hürlimann (1897-1984); he also wrote the introduction to the volume on English cathedrals. He was a Swiss publisher, but was better known as a photographer; his photographs featured in a number of books. Peter Meyer provides descriptive notes to his photographs in both volumes. Geoffrey Grigson (1905-1985) was a British writer, editor, critic, exhibition curator, anthologist and naturalist. He provides a foreword to the volume on English cathedrals. Jean Bony (1908-1995), a French medieval architectural historian specialising in Gothic architecture, provides an introduction to the volume on French cathedrals. In publisher's original cloth bindings, with original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, cloth to both volumes in lovely condition, with just a bit of soiling to the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last couple of pages. Photographic plates are in excellent condition. Dust wrappers are sunned to the spines and chipped to the head and tail of the spines, with wear to the joints and folds of the flaps. The French Cathedrals dust wrapper is torn to the spine.
