William Barrett's major work and first published history of the city of Bristol. Originally published in 1789. Devoted to the origins of Bristol, its history in Saxon and Norman times and development in the eighteenth century, its civil government, trade, various religious foundations, notable benefactors, and eminent men of Bristol. While researching for the publication of this work, Barrett met with forger Thomas Chatterton who produced many documents for him. Many of his fabrications did make it into his History. However, it is accepted that the work was well produced and contained much genuine information. Number sixty-six of two-hundred and fifty copies produced in facsimile. A scarce work. Complete with folding map and enclosed in unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, lightly bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, minor faint damp mark to rear board. Dust wrapper unclipped and excellent with minor shelf wear only, faint tide mark internally to rear wrap, not affecting externals. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting to fore edge, affecting occasional leaf particularly first and last few. Pages otherwise bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed/Near Fine.
