Volume III contains a selection of English poetry from the reigns of King James I, King Charles I and King Charles II. It also contains a conclusion to and alphabetical list of the Specimens. George Ellis (1753-1815) was a Jamaican-born English antiquary, satirical poet and M.P. He is best known for this work, Specimens of the Early English Poets, and also Specimens of Early English Metrical Romances, which played an influential part in acquainting the general reading public with Middle English poetry. Rebacked in full calf, with original mottled calf laid down to the boards. Externally very smart, though somewhat rubbed to the boards, more so to Volume III. Hinges of all volumes are splitting but still firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with a scattering of spots to the first and last few pages of all volumes. Very Good .
