The first edition of this illustrated early 19th century topographical work on Great Britain, forged by Charles Bertram who claimed it was the work of 15th century monk Richard of Cirencester. An interesting early nineteenth century topographical work on Great Britain. This work was forged by Charles Bertram, who claimed it was written by fifteenth-century monk Richard of Cirencester. Despite its forgery, which was not discovered until the mid nineteenth century, this text was a major source of information on British topography. Containing contributions from Lord Bishop of Cloyne, Reverend Thomas Leman, Reverend William Coxe, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, and William Owen Pughe. Illustrated with two folding maps. Collated, and lacking the engraved plate of the portrait of Richard of Cirencester. The first edition of this work. In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with some light rubbing to the spine, joints, and extremities, and light shelf wear to the boards. A small bookseller's sticker to the rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. A few patches of offsetting and a few spots to the pages, particularly to the maps and pages opposite the maps, but otherwise pages are generally bright and clean.
