Disraeli is best known as a Conservative politician and as prime minister of the United Kingdom in the late nineteenth century. Each book has an introduction by Philip Guedalla. This set comprises of: Volume I, 'Vivian Grey&apos. This novel follows the title character as he rises from childhood into the world of politics. Volume II, 'The Young Duke&apos. This is a novel that follows the life and adventures of George Augustus Frederick, the young Duke of the title. The novel sees Frederick explores his career and the world of love and engagement. Volume III, 'Popanilla and Other Tales&apos. An allegorical story which follows an exciting voyage, but is also a satire on contemporary society. Volume IV, 'Contarini Fleming', a psychological romance novel, following Contarini, who runs away to Venice, where his mother was born. The novel follows political movements and developments throughout Europe. Disraeli considered 'Contarini Fleming' to be his best novel, despite it being a financial failure. Volume V, 'Alory' is an account of the life of David Alroy, heavily fictionalised. The novel portrays the problems of a medieval Jewish man trying to decide between a small and exclusively Jewish state, and a large Empire. Volume VI, 'Henrietta Temple&apos. This is a novel about the secret love and engagement between Ferdinand Armine, an aristocrat, and Henriette Temple, the tenant of a neighbouring estate, the pair having fallen in love at first sight. Volume VII, 'Venetia', a lightweight romantic fantasy novel. Volume VIII, 'Coningsby', is a political novel follow the career of the aspiring Henry Coningsby. Volume IX, 'Sybil&apos. This is a novel about the plight of the working classes in England. This novel stemmed from Disraeli's interested in the Chartist movement, which was a working-class political reformist movement, seeking universal male suffrage, however it failed as a parliamentary movement. Disraeli was deeply interested in helping the working class living conditions. Volume X, 'Tancred' follows Lord Montacute, a young hero, who is destined to live the life of a member of the British ruling class. However he decides to retraces the steps of his Crusader ancestors to the Holy Land. Volume XI, 'Lothair' follows a young wealthy orphaned nobleman, who finds himself the centre of attention of three women of different religions. Volume XII, 'Endymion', followed by 'Falconet', is a romance novel following the rising Tory politicians William Pitt Ferrars. Uniformly bound in the original cloth. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the edges. A few light marks to the boards. Light fading to the spines. Small tear to the hinge of volume one. Light spotting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Bookseller's label to the front paste-down of volume four. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free endpaper of volumes eight. nine and eleven. Offsetting to the free endpapers of volume eight. Library stamps to the front paste-downs, final pages and to the rear of the title pages of volumes eleven and twelve. Internally, firmly bound. Pages slightly age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean with only the occasional few spots. Tear to page xi of volume one. Some offsetting to the front blank of volume one.
