During his time serving in the Peninsula he was chiefly employed in gaining intelligence, and was present at many important events of the War, including the actions from Corunna to the storming of San Sebastian. He served in the Peninsula until 1814. Whilst he was serving in the army Hay would be making the literary sketches that eventually appeared in these two volumes. In a half straight grain morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Spines are faded. Light rubbing to the leather. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Label to the rear paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a few scattered spots.
