The very scarce first edition, last seen at auction in 1939.Complete in two volumes.Half-title present to each volume.Volume I illustrated with eleven plates.Volume II illustrated with eleven plates.Collated, complete.Major Leith Hay's first hand account of the fighting in the Peninsular War. Hay entered the army and went to the Peninsula in 1808 as an aide-de-camp to his uncle, General Sir James Leith. During his time serving in the Peninsula he was chiefly employed in gaining intelligence, and was present at many important events of the War, including the actions from Corunna to the storming of San Sebastian. He served in the Peninsula until 1814. Whilst he was serving in the army Hay would be making the literary sketches that eventually appeared in these two volumes. In a half straight grain morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Spines are faded. Light rubbing to the leather. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Label to the rear paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a few scattered spots.
