A smart copy of the scarce first edition of and Englishwoman's account of her 1815 travels in France and Belgium, during the Napoleonic wars. Ann Charlotte Waldie, later Mrs. Eaton, in June 1815 visited Brussels alongside her brother John and sister Jane, chronicling the events she witnessed in this memoir. Together they were evacuated to Antwerp, witnessed the Battle of Waterloo, and only six weeks after their arrival in Brussels, returned to England. The scarce first edition; a second edition was not published until 1853, under a different title.In a signed half calf binding from Marshall of Aylesbury. With an armorial bookplate and contemporary inscription to the front pastedown.Reviewed by John Sandler as containing 'a very graphic and detailed description of the battlefield shortly after the battle&apos. Noted for its unflinching account of the horrors of Waterloo, the work was considered one of the best contemporary accounts of the events detailed, and praised for its English patriotism. In a half calf signed binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, excellent. Armorial bookplate and inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
