Description: London, G. and W. B. Whittaker, 1824 . First edition. Leather. The scarce first edition, third state of Peter Schlemihl from the German of Lamotte Fouque with illustrations from George Cruikshank. First edition, third state of Peter Schlemihl from the German of Lamotte Fouque, originally by Albert von Chamisso and translated by John Bowring in half morocco binding. With seven monochrome plates of illustrations by George Cruikshank. The third impression. This edition was published in three states. The third state is indicated by the date as 1824 and the address 'Ave Maria' having no hyphen between 'Ave' and 'Maria&apos. In addition, the illustrator's name is misspelt as 'Cruickshank' and lines 4-5 on page ix has a misspelling of 'aukwardness' for 'awkwardness&apos. The latter two mistakes were corrected in the second edition, which was also published in 1824. The novella tells the story of Peter Schlemihl, who sells his shadow to the Devil for a bottomless wallet. Originally written by Albert von Chamisso, an early nineteenth century German poet. The original German was edited by Lamotte Fouque of which this translation is based. In half morocco binding and marbled paper boards. Externally, very smart. There is very slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with occasional spotting. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: George Cruikshank. Very Good Indeed .
