The first edition of this work, in a half calf binding. Bookplate to the front paste down. This work has been described as "a combined travel book and record of regional history in the guise of a novel" and recounts the traditional festivities surrounding the renovation of the White Horse. Delightfully illustrated throughout by Richard Doyle (1824-1883), a notable illustrator recognised for the frequent appearance of his work in Punch magazine. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) was an English lawyer, judge, politician and author, who was born in the village of Uffington. He is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days, a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes had attended. In a half calf binding. Externally smart, with minor bumping to the boards and some rubbing to the extremities, joints and head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound.
