Ink inscription to the paste down, dated 1934. Ink inscription to first blank page, dated 1836. Further ink inscriptions to page 117. 18 plates. 2 folding maps. The first map is a plan of the town of Cheltenham in 1834, the second is a map of Cheltenham and the surrounding areas. Collated complete. With the prefaces to the first and second editions. In second edition of this historic guide to Cheltenham, Davies provides a history of the town and descriptions of its baths, pump rooms, public institutions, and fashionable amusements. He also gives a brief overview of the surrounding areas. The author Henry Davies (1804-1890) was a journalist, publisher and librarian at Cheltenham, who took an active part in the town"s political life, and edited the Cheltenham Looker-On for 57 years. He opened the Montpellier Library, a subscription library from which this book was published, and played a part in the founding of Cheltenham College in 1842. In a quarter cloth binding with paper boards. Externally very smart, with minimal wear to the extremities and the spine. Internally, firmly bound.
