With the date 23rd June 1919 to the tail of the contents page, the eighty-one pages of poetry in this volume are largely religious in nature, and reflect on the tragedies of the First World war.With twenty-eight typed poems, and a further handwritten poem, titled 'The Chaplain', loosely inserted.Poems with a religious theme include 'The Shrouded Cloth', 'The Courage of Christ', 'The Marks of the Lord Jesus', 'The Well of Bethlehem' and 'The Venture of Faith&apos. Pastoral poems include 'The Promise of Springtime', 'A Spring Walk' and 'Autumn&apos. The volume concludes with '1918: A Retrospect', which discusses 'golden threads of sacrifice' and 'payment of a heavy price' regarding the year in which 'tyranny met its doom,' And happy Peace appeared&apos.An intriguing insight into a religious response to the conclusion of the war. In the original quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards, and handwritten paper label to front board. Rubbing to back strip, with a bump to back strip head. Front hinge lightly strained, resulting in two small closed tears to title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean, and a touch age toned due to paper type.
