This Gothic novel was largely inspired by The Arabian Nights, and reflects the eighteenth-century obsession with the Orient. Set in the Middle East, it depicts Oriental culture using myth, legend, and customs, as well as including Gothic thematic elements of supernaturalism and the spiritual world. The third edition of this work, originally written in French in 1786. Written by William Beckford, an eighteenth and nineteenth century English novelist and patron of the arts. He is best known for Vathek, as well as for building Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire and Lansdown Tower (i.e. 'Beckford's Tower') in Bath. Containing an engraved frontispiece based on a drawing by Isaac Taylor Jr. Two pages of adverts bound after the title page.Bound without the half-title and errata slip. In full contemporary calf binding. Externally, rebacked, with the original boards and spine laid down. Some light shelf wear to the boards and light rubbing to the spine. Internally, firmly bound.
