These volumes were conducted byProfessor John Eadie, John Francis Waller, Professor W. J. M. Rankine, Edwin Lankester and Professor Francis Bowen. The volumes were edited by John Francis Waller. These memoirs are written by writers of eminence in the various branches of literature, science and art. Some of the contributors to volume I are Edward Baines, John Stuart Blackie and Rebecca More. Some of the contributors to volume II are Hugh Blackburn, George Bullen and John M. Ross. Some of the contributors to volume Rev. W. Lindsay Alexander, Francis Espinasse and Christina G. Rossetti. Within the preface, biography is stated at being "the most valuable and interesting record which literature can offer to mankind," presenting the great drama of humanity. The Imperial Dictionary of Universal Biography is a biographical dictionary from the nineteenth century which was published by William Mackenzie. Volume I spans books one to six, volume II spans books seven to halfway through book twelve and volume III spans books twelve to sixteen.All volumes have six portrait plates to the front, apart from volumes fourteen and sixteen which have five. Volume ten also has an extra loose portrait of George V. Collated, complete.Volume sixteen also has a preface to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. The spines are faded and a little bumped with volumes VI and IV having the most faded spines. Internally, the front and rear hinges of volume one and 5 are loosening.
