An illustrated mid nineteenth century edition of this German language Catholic prayer book, devised by theologian Philipp Joseph Brunner.  In a striking binding, with velvet covered boards and a bright glass covered and framed pictorial inlay to the centre of the front board, depicting Mary and the baby Jesus.Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and vignette title page and with four further engraved plates, retaining their original tissue guards.With a contemporary inscription to the recto of a front endpaper, and a further pencil inscription, dated 1888, to the recto of the frontispiece.Undated, dated c. 1850 via WorldCat.A beautifully bound prayer book from a member of the Bavarian Illuminati who expressed his desire to promote general education in the public, and Enlightenment Christianity. Bound in calf backed velvet covered boards, with exceptionally bright framed pictorial inlay to front board. Pictorial inlay and board perimeters surrounded by metal borders. Remnants of metal clasp to fore edge of front and rear board, no longer in working order. Rubbing to tail of front board, resulting in some loss to velvet. Gilt detailing to back strip. Front joint strained, with board loosely held to head only. Contemporary inscription to recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned, with instances of significant spotting throughout, most prominent to first and last few leaves, and pages surrounding plates. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
