The volume is extensively illustrated with one hundred and twenty illustrations throughout the text. There is also thirty-two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. There is an inscription to the front free endpaper which reads: To Mr Alfred Darwin, junior, A Christmas present from Dr J. B. Quies. Christmas Day, 1886. In the publisher's original decorated cloth boards. Externally, generally smart. The spine is a little faded and bumped and there is some fading to the joints and extremities and a few marks to the boards. There is an inscription to the front free endpaper.
