He was an abolitionist, engineer, and big game hunter, and he was the Governor-general of the Equatorial Nile Basin in the nineteenth century. Though he was renowned for being an explorer, he never received quite the same amount of acclamation that his contemporaries did. Queen Victoria refused to meet Baker, due to the way in which he met his wife; he had bought his wife, Florence, as a slave after they had fallen in love.Bookplate to the front paste down.
