The first edition of this work. Novel in three volumes by John Galt, published anonymously under 'the author of "Annals of the Parish," &c.' Telling of the rise of a Scotsman to wealth, social prestige, and political power in London. Originally intended as a short sketch, Galt was persuaded by the publisher to expand into a three volume novel, decision which he later regretted. The early chapters concerning Wylie's childhood are largely autobiographical. In uniform half calf bindings. Bound without half titles.From the library of Charles Shaw-Lefevre, 1st Viscount Eversley, with his bookplate to front pastedown. He was a British Whig politician, second-longest serving Speaker of the House of Commons, from 1839 to 1857. In uniform half calf bindings with marbled boards and edges, renewed endpapers. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, spine lightly marked and sunned. Charles first Viscount Eversley of Heckfield in the County of Southampton's bookplate to front pastedown. Previous ownership inscription to title page vols. II and III, dated 1823 'Whitbread&apos. Internally, firmly bound. Minor odd light spotting to first few leaves, otherwise pages bright and clean.
