The first edition of this work.Complete in two volumes. The collection of letters and memoirs of Mary Crawford Fraser, detailing her time spent with her husband in Japan from 1889 until she was widowed in 1894.During this period Fraser's husband was working as a diplomat in Japan, his title being the Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary, his job being to establish relations between Britain and Japan. Sadly her husband died one month before signing the final treaty.Fraser was a notable figure for her travel writing, and various other works. She also came from a prominent family, her brother being the novelist Francis Marion Crawford, and she was the niece of the abolitionist Julia Ward Howe. Fraser's story 'The Satanist', published in 1912, is considered to be one of the influences that set the standard for occult fiction of the 1960s.Each volume illustrated with a frontispiece, and many full-paged and in-text illustrations throughout.Bookplate of Charles William Dyson Perrins to the front paste downs. Perrins was the grandson of William Perrins, who founded the Lea & Perrins brand of Worcestershire sauce. Throughout his life he amassed one of the most important book collection sin the world - he sold off his important early printed books after World War II to held to finance and re-establish the Royal Worcester factory. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Spine is a little faded. Minor bumping to the spine and extremities. A few light marks to the boards and spines.
