Title: Cleobury Mortimer 1601-1812 and a Dream of Easter-Even
Description: Shrewsbury; Oswestry, Adnitt and Naunton; Woodall and Venables, 1909. First edition. Cloth. An interesting celebration of the hamlet of Cleobury Mortimer within Shropshire, written by Frances C. Childe, with this copy belonging to the author herself, including original letters, drawings, and pamphlets inserted into the text. The reverse of the page shows a drawn plan of the Castle Ditch 'belonging to W. Childe Esq', a related family member to Childe. This is an unusual and interesting topographical work on Cleobury Mortimer, a market town and civil parish in Shropshire England, written by local historian Frances Christina Baldwyne-Childe (d 1930). This particular copy belonged to Baldwyne-Childe herself, with her own original letters bound into the work, annotations to the title pages, and additional letters and drawings loosely inserted into the text. This work includes 'Cleobury Mortimer' as well as additional works by the author such as 'Extracts from the Note-Books of a Shropshire Vicar',  'History and and Monuments' and 'The Register of Cleobury Mortimer', with an additional pamphlet titled 'A Dream of Easter-Even' bound into the rear of the text. All of the additional pamphlets, letters, and drawings that the author added to this work offer a deeper and more personal glimpse into Childe's relationship with the county of Shropshire, as well as the efforts that she took to ensure that the gathered information was accurate. Frances Christina Baldwyne-Childe was part of an important family within Cleobury Mortimer, including an ancestor name William Childe of Kinlet who helped to introduce fox-hunting to the county of Shropshire. Collated, complete. Bound in a full cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light wear to the extremities with marks to the boards, particularly to the fore edge of front board. Remnants of title label to spine, which reads 'Notes Of', which might have been written by the author herself. Illustrated bookplate to front paste down. Offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Very Good . Ill.: Frances C. Baldwyn Childe. Very Good .
