This is a lovely leather-bound two volume set containing the memoirs of Philibert de Gramont, the Count de Gramont, written by his brother-in-law Antoine Hamilton, with numerous illustrated plates throughout the text. 1811 Edition, written in the original French.Two volume set in a crushed morocco binding with gilt bordered to boards as well as spine. Illustrated with frontispieces to both of the volumes as well as numerous illustrated plates.This is a lovely set of volumes containing the 'Memoires du Comte de Grammont', written by Antoine Hamilton. This work chronicles the time that Philibert de Gramont, the French nobleman and uncle of Catherine, princess of Monaco, spent at the court of Charles II at Whitehall.This work was originally written between 1704-1710, and made Hamilton one of the 'classical writer' of France. The work is said to have been dictated by Gramont himself, but critics state the share that Hamilton made in the book's development is obvious. Therefore, the genre of this work follows between memoirs, biography, and fiction.Vol I has nineteen illustrated plates of different important figures, while Vol II has forty-four plates.Antoine Hamilton (1645-1719) was a soldier and writer who fought in the Franco-Dutch and Williamite Wars, and is best known for this memoir that he wrote about his brother-in-law.With a dated ink inscription from October 11th, 1827 from prior owner Louisa Wentworth Sta-----.Collated, complete.  Bound in a contemporary morocco binding. Externally, excellent, with minimal rubbing to the extremities and spine, and just a bit of light fading to the spine and the edges of the boards where the joints meet the spine. Marks to the rear board of Vol I. Ink inscription to the recto of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Various.
