H. Calderon, W. Millaid, and other artists.This is a lovely collection of children's parables by Margaret Gatty, containing thoughtful tales for 'educated young persons and adults&apos. These stories draw lessons of worldly and spiritual wisdom from the natural world in a 'simple and sensible ways&apos. Interestingly, Gatty used a few of these tales to argue against Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species&apos.  Contents include 'A Lesson of Faith', 'The Law of Authority and Obedience', 'The Unknown Land', 'A Lesson of Hope', and 'The Circle of Blessing&apos. Margaret Gatty (1809-1873) was an English children's author as well as a writer on marine biology. She wrote a range of popular tales for young people, which 'she hoped would influence adult minds as well&apos. Works by Gatty include 'Worlds not Realised', 'Proverbs Illustrated', and 'Aunt Judy's Tales&apos. Ink inscription to top of half-title page which reads 'To our Mother- from R + L. M. Shelly Dec. 25. 1864.'Erratum leaf inserted directly before the contents page at the beginning of text.Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of text. Collated, complete. Bound in a contemporary cloth binding with a gilt inlay. Externally, very smart, with just a bit of wear to the extremities and the the spine. The work has been rebacked with the original cloth laid down to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with age-toning to pages and the odd spot.
