Description: London, Geo. B Whittaker, 1826. Leather. A scarce edition of Goldsmith"s Abrigement of the History of Rome. With a folding map of the Roman Empire and portrait of the author. Originally published in 1818, this work is a scarce tenth edition of "Pinnock's improved edition of Dr. Goldsmith's abridgment of the history of Rome", written for the use of Schools. Oliver Goldsmith (1728  1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, dramatist, and poet. He is best known for his novel "The Vicar of Wakefield" (1766). With a frontispiece portrait of Goldsmith, a half-title page illustration, and folding map. William Pinnock (1782Â1843) was a British publisher, educational writer and bookseller. Prior owner"s ink inscription to recto of front endpaper, dated 1834. With two pages of publisher"s advertisements to the rear. In original full calf binding. Some rubbing to the boards and spine, particularly the rear board and head of the spine. Some of the leather at the head of the spine has come away. Rubbing to the extremities. Signature to recto of front endpaper date 1834. Pastedown papers are fraying slightly to the hinges. Internally, generally firmly bound. Rear page is missing after p451. Pages are quite age-toned with some spotting throughout. Folding plate is torn to the centre and top right. Good .
