Browning used the earliest English account of this German legend to write this poem, which was first published in his 'Dramatic Lyrics' in 1842. This retelling is particularly known for its wordplay, rhyming, and general humour. Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet and playwright who is considered one of the most established of the Victorian poets. Well known works by the poet include 'Pauline', 'Paracelsus', and 'Dramatis Personae&apos.Undated, so dated from Jisc using an identical copy held at the University of Oxford library, as well as a dated inscription on front paste down.Ink inscription to front pastedown reads, 'Michael- with much love from Aunt and Uncle Laff June 1921&apos. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding on paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Wear to the extremities and to the spine, with noticeable discolouration to the spine region. Edge wear has resulted in a bit of loss to the boards and to the head and tail of spine, with the spine coming away from the binding at the center. Front hinge is straining. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with scattered spotting throughout the text. Colour illustrations are bright and clean. Good . Ill.: Kate Greenaway. Good .
