These books were well-read within France at the time for reflecting current events with historical accuracy, but through the personal lens of fictionalised characters. These works were often extremely anti-monarchist, leading them to be well loved by the likes of Victor Hugo and Emile Zola, but criticised in the 'Le Figaro' daily newspaper. Contents include 'Le Conscrit de 1813', 'Waterloo', 'Madame Therese ou Les Volontaires de 92', 'L'Homme du Peuple', and 'La Guerre&apos. Erckmann-Chatrian was the name used by Emile Erckmann (1822-1899) and Alexandre Chatrian (1826-1890), who both specialised in military fiction, as well as ghost stories, and co-wrote these works together. They wrote a range of works together from 1847 to the mid-1880s, when they had a quarrel and would not produce any more stories jointly. Undated, so dated from Jisc using similar copies held at the British Library as well as the University of Edinburgh and University of Oxford. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of the 'Waterloo' section of text.Collated, complete. Bound in a full-calf morocco binding with Wimbledon School gilt inscription on front boards. Externally, very smart. Minimal rubbing to the extremities and the spine with fading along the margins of boards and the spine. Light wear to the bands of joints. Leather prize bookplate to front paste down.
