Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1776-1810) was the wife of King Frederick William III and was particularly famous for meeting Napoleon I in 1807. She met with him to plead unsuccessfully for favourable terms after Prussia suffered losses in the Napoleonic Wars. Contents include 'The Mecklenburg Princess in Darmstadt', 'The Young Queen on the Throne', 'Louise and Napoleon at Tilsit', and 'Return Home and Death&apos. Written by Gertrude Aretz (1889-1938) a German historian and publisher. She was married to the historian Friedrich Max Kircheisen, as well as the publisher Paul Aretz. Translated from the German by Ruth Putnam. With a prior owner's ink inscription to the title page, which says 'To Mary Louise from Granddaddy December 25 1931&apos.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with no noticeable faults other than a bit of bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Dust wrapper is very smart, with minimal edge wear to wraps and a bit of age-toning to the margins of wraps, fly leaves, and reverse. Spine region is very lightly faded with a few marks to the wraps and the fly leaves. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to margins of text.
