Written by Pitre-Chevalier, historian known as an editor of the French daily morning newspaper Le Figaro. With details on the history of the peninsula both ancient from its Celtic origins and modern until the nineteenth century, with descriptions of major historical evens, uses and customs, and its development in history. Featuring a stunning heraldic frontispiece in golden colour as well as an engraved portrait of Vte. de Chateaubriand, to whom the volume is dedicated, numerous illustrations in text and full page plates, including coloured maps and heraldic shields as well as illustrating landscapes, costumes, portraits, and more in black and white. Collated, complete with frontispiece, twenty-one full page steel engravings, twelve full page woodcut plates, one plate of coins, six chromolithograph plates of coats of arms, two colour maps, and half title. In a full straight up grain morocco binding with four raised bands and decorative embossing to the boards and spine, gilt tot he edges. Externally rather smart with minor shelf wear only, minor rubbing to the extremities of the boards, a touch of sunning to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Occasional minor light spotting to the odd leaf, otherwise the pages are generally very clean and bright throughout. Illustrated with forty three full page plates, of which eight in colour.
