A beautifully illustrated copy of 'L'oie du Capitole', a French children's book about the mythological capitol geese, with hand-coloured illustrations. 'Edition du Figaro', scarce. Illustrations include numerous hand-painted in-text illustrations throughout work. 'L'oie du Capitole' is an amusing children's book, written in French and based upon the mythological 'Oies du Capitole&apos. The Capitol Geese refers to an event from the sixth century, in which geese raised the alarm to the Roman people when the Gauls tried to take them by surprise at night.  Other interesting animals are introduced, such as elephants, camels, and lions. Written by Leo Claretie (1862-1924), a french journalist. Claretie tragically died when he was hit by a train in the 1920s. With drawings by Auguste Vimar (1851-1916), a visual artist who contributed to a range of children's books. Ink inscription to front pastedown from prior owner, stating 'Jacques Chaigne, a son grand ami, Jean.' Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with gilt illustration still bright on front boards. Light fading to the margins of boards with a few marks. Light wear to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's ink inscription to front pastedown and endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned, but colour illustrations remain bright. Very Good . Ill.: Auguste Vimar. Very Good .
