With an appendix being an essay on the natural history of the district by G. Mantell.The first and only edition of this important work, complete in two volumes. Volume I is illustrated with a folding frontispiece, twenty-nine lithographic drawings, two copper plates, two folding genealogical charts, and vignettes throughout. Volume II is illustrated with seven copper-plate engravings, a frontispiece and wood engravings throughout. Collated, complete.With the contemporary inscription 'Frederick Marten, from his Dear Mother 1824&apos. The second volume has the ownership bookplate of Fred. & Eliz. Marten to the front pastedown. According to the list of subscribers, this work was funded by some nine people with the surname Marten. A smart first edition of this work, bound in contemporary leather. In a full straight grain morocco binding; first volume has been rebacked, with the original spines and boards laid down. Externally generally smart; slight loss and rubbing to the spines and extremities are bumped. Contemporary gift inscription to the front blank of volume I. Ownership bookplate of Fred. & Eliz. Marten to the front pastedown of volume II. Internally, generally firmly bound; front hinge is quite strained after the front endpaper of both volumes. Pages are a little spotted. Good .
