An 1859 reprint of 'The Deserted Village', a politically charged pastoral poem by 18th century novelist Oliver Goldsmith. Originally published in 1770, this poem was intended as a social critique of rural depopulation, the privatisation of land, and excessive wealth. 'The Deserted Village' had an enormously positive reception during the Victorian era, and was even adapted into an opera of the same name. Beautifully illustrated by the Etching Club, with 35 wooden engravings accompanying the heroic couplets. These engravings were drawn on wood from the original etchings by E.K. Johnson, while the engravings were made by Horace Harral, Thomas Bolton, and James Cooper. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. The boards are rubbed slightly which has resulted in some slight discolouration and fading. Some wear to the head and tail of spine, and to the extremities. Bookseller's label on rear paste down. Some faint spotting on pastedowns and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. The tissue guards between pages vi and page 7, and pages 42 and page 43, are working loose. Pages are bright and clean with a few scattered spots. Very Good . Ill.: The Etching Club. Very Good .
