In the original French. An innovative collage novel and artist's book by Max Ernst, comprising one-hundred-and-eighty-two plates created by cutting and re-organising illustrations from Victorian encyclopaedias and novels to present a dark, surreal world. He was the inventor of the frottage, a technique that uses pencil rubbings of objects as a source of images, as well as the grattage, where paint is scraped across canvas to reveal imprints of objects placed beneath. His cottage novels were among some of his most well-known work. In the original publisher's colourful paper wraps. Externally generally very smart with minor shelf wear and occasional faint marking to the wraps. With a slight damp marking to the front wrap of vol. I and minor to vol. II. The slipcase is sound with minor chipping tot he extremities and a minor damp marking to the illustrated board and spine. Internally, firmly bound. A minor staining mark to the lower right corner of the first few leaves of volume I, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with one-hundred-and-eighty-two full page plates.
